Hair Journey

I stopped chemically processing my hair in my early twenties.  I then started pressing it, which was only slightly less damaging.  When I was 23 years old, I took a trip to New York where I met my cousin’s then fiancé. She’d read a book called good hair and had started wearing her hair naturally. This was 1993.

When I return to Los Angeles I also read good hair and started experimenting with natural hair styles. Unfortunately, my hair was so lifeless from repeated heat processing that the natural hairstyles did not work well. In 1994 I made the bold move of cutting my shoulder length hair completely off.

I loved it!

I wore that style for about 2 years. Then I wore traditional locks for about 4 years. Then I had an ill-advised encounter with a texturizer as recommended in good hair.  I really hated that I did that.

I went back to the bald look for another 2 years or so, then I discovered sisterlocks.  Sisterlocks have been amazing and I’ve worn them for the last 9 years.

Recently I discovered Wen by Chaz Dean.  Wen has changed my life! I watched the infomercial for years but never believed it could actually work on African American hair.  But the truth is my hair is softer and more moisturized than it’s ever been in my life.  It got me wondering what my hair would be like if I wore it naturally without locks.

On August 3 of this year, I’ll be going back to the bald look.  I admit it will be nice to have a break from all this hair. I love it, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a lot. In a few months, I’ll start the next phase of my hair journey. In the meantime, I’m going to explore fully my current length and the bald look and really celebrate my evolving style. Should be quite a ride.

Stay tuned for the big chop on August 3!
